Mustard Aphid Attack at Pod Formation Stage

Mustard Aphid Attack at Pod Formation Stage

Mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) infestation peaks during cool, moist winter weather, especially from flowering to pod formation. This is the most critical stage, as aphids suck sap from pods and flowers, reducing grain size and significantly lowering oil content.

How to Identify Early Symptoms ?

  • Clusters of small, greenish-black aphids on tender shoots, buds, flowers, and pods
  • Leaves turning yellow and curling
  • Sticky honeydew deposits leading to sooty mold
  • Poor pod filling and shriveled seeds

Infestation spreads quickly and can cause heavy yield losses if not controlled early.

Control

When aphid population exceeds ETL (50–60 aphids per 10 cm twig):

Use any one:

  1. Imidacloprid 17.8% SL @ 0.5 ml/l
  2. Thiamethoxam 25% WG @ 0.25 g/l
  3. Acetamiprid 20% SP @ 0.3 g/l

Important:

Spray during morning or late afternoon to avoid harming pollinators. Avoid spraying during full bloom to protect bees.

Quick Tip for Farmers :

Mustard aphids attack most aggressively during flowering and pod formation—control them early to protect seed size and oil content.
